CALL TO ACTION
The Illinois Corn Growers Association is in support of HB 1979, a state bill that redefines “gasohol” in Illinois statute. Right now, “gasohol” is defined as 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline, but with the allowable blend of ethanol moving to 15% per the USEPA, we need to update this definition.
The Illinois definition of gasohol (10% ethanol/90% gasoline) was established in the revenue article of Illinois statute many years ago to promote the domestic production and utilization of ethanol in motor fuel in IL by providing an incentive – a state sales tax reduction on gasohol sales. Without updating the definition of gasohol, there is no incentive for Illinois petroleum marketers to sell ethanol blends of 15%.
Nothing in this legislation requires the fuel supply sector to market higher blends. Current law and this proposal only offer an incentive.
