U.S. Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth, representing Illinois' 8th Congressional District, spoke last week at a biofuels briefing in Washington, DC, hosted by the Environmental and Energy Study Institute. The briefing was supported by the Illinois Corn. In her prepared comments, Congresswoman Duckworth called both the EPA and the Obama Administration to task for their treatment of the Renewable Fuel Standard. It was just on May 29th that the USEPA released their RVO numbers...the target for the number of gallons of ethanol to be blended into our nations fuel supply under the RFS. The American Lung Association in Illinois (ALAIL) has placed a large advertising buy on three Chicago radio stations this week. The point of the ad is to educate listeners on how higher blends of ethanol can help improve air quality. Illinois Corn Marketing Board invests farmer checkoff dollars with ALAIL to help promote ethanol education and to facilitate grants that help offset the costs of the necessary pump upgrades to make higher ethanol blends available at gas stations.

While many recent studies have documented that agricultural producers must significantly increase yields in order to meet the food, feed, and fuel demands of a growing population, few have given practical solutions on how to do this. Crop science researchers at the University of Illinois interested in determining and reducing corn yield gaps are addressing this important issue by taking a systematic approach to the problem. Ted Mottaz, a delegate from Illinois to the Corn Congress last week, explains in this audio update the grassroots policy work supported by Illinois corn farmers with regard to nutrient management and water quality. As Mottaz explains, the addition of voluntary program is important. We believe that farmers will adopt on a voluntary basis the appropriate best management practices for their farms. At last week's Corn Congress, Paul Jeschke, a corn farmer from Mazon in Grundy County, joined his peers in representing IL corn farmers in developing grassroots policy. Jeschke spoke to policies that will move the needle on improving corn demand. Your profitability is our bottom line at IL Corn and we know that developing policies to improve demand as you continue to grow record crops should be a top priority. In this audio update Jeschke speaks about the outlook for ethanol expansion. As Jeschke explains, if we can move another 300 million gallons of ethanol into the ethanol, that will increase grind by 100 million bushels, equating to an estimated 10 to 15 cent bump in prices.
