IL CORN MOURNS THE LOSS OF RECENT DIRECTOR: RICHARD GATES

Richard W. Gates, former Illinois Corn Growers Association Director of District 15 from Carmi, passed away on January 5 at the age of 75. 

 

Gates was a valued member of the ICGA Board of Directors, representing farmers in southern Illinois on legislative issues in Springfield and Washington, DC.  Gates was respected for his calm and quiet demeanor, his collaborative attitude and his willingness to show up for any need.

 

He was born in Enfield, IL on August 16, 1943 and became a 4th generation farmer.  He was the 1973 Jaycee's Young Farmer of the Year and was named the 1995 Soil and Water Conservation Farm Family of the Year.  Gates was a Pioneer Seed Dealer for 35 years.  He also worked as a rural mail carrier, retiring after 34 1/2 years.

 

Richard Gates served on the ICGA Board of Directors from June 2006 to November 2016.

 

Should any farmer members or farmer leaders wish to honor Richard’s life, memorial contributions may be made to the Richard Gates Memorial Football Scholarship, which will be awarded to a graduating CWC Football player and will be accepted at First Bank in Carmi.
