Whether you find yourself in the winners or losers column this morning after the November 6 election, one thing’s for sure. Most political watchers believe that with President Obama’s re-election comes a better shot at passing a farm bill during the Lame Duck session of Congress. Most peg the chances at 50/50. Farmers need to pick up the phone and call their member of Congress and say you want a Farm Bill Now.

No doubt some folks are smarting this morning from the results of the election. Sit with that for a bit if you need to. But now’s the time to really crank up the heat on Congress. According to some, enough pressure from farm country could mean that we save parts of the farm bill, including  some crop insurance funding, that will undoubtedly be lost if the new legislation gets pushed to 2013 or even 2014.

Pick up the phone and dial 888-WHY-CORN. That’s 888-949-2676. The U.S. House of Representatives switchboard operator will answer. Asked to be transferred to your member’s office and tell the staffer that answers that you’re calling to ask for a farm bill to be passed in Lame Duck legislation.

Daniel Looker reported yesterday at Agriculture Online that, “House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas (R-OK) still wants to pass a farm bill in the lame duck session of Congress after the election, but it could be pushed into 2013, he said shortly before voting began. If that happens, he expects deeper cuts.
