HSUS SUES NATIONAL PORK BOARD

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has broadened its attack on agriculture. Today, word was released that HSUS has sued the National Pork Board. NPB joins the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association as being the subjects of new legal assaults by HSUS. IL Corn keeps an eye on groups like HSUS who publicly declare their intent is to shut-down animal agriculture. 4.7% of corn grown in Illinois is fed to hogs in Illinois.

Feedstuffs Foodlink published the story here. According to Feedstuffs, “HSUS said, ‘through months of research,’ it had uncovered ‘glaring legal violations, conflicts of interest and an exorbitantly overinflated price’ in the purchase agreement and suggested that the board's payments to NPPC means that checkoff money is being used for public affairs, which is a violation of the law that created the checkoff.

Interestingly, HSUS has an individual on their payroll who claims to be a pig farmer. From the HSUS press release, “The National Pork Producers Council has a failed track record when it comes to representing family farmers and preventing animal cruelty,” said Joe Maxwell, director of rural development and outreach at The HSUS and a Missouri pig farmer. “While we can’t force NPPC to care about animals or family farmers, through this lawsuit we can work to stop our money from being unlawfully funneled straight to its lobbyists who work against us.”
