WATER TESTING IS EVEN EASIER THAN BEFORE!

Among the updates to the www.ilcorn.org website is a new water quality page that makes testing the tile, ditch or creek water on your farm even easier than before!

Located at the shortcut, www.ilcorn.org/nutrientstrategy, you can now find an interactive map that will allow you to see all the water testing sites at a glance.  Counties that host free water testing are highlighted in green and when you click on a green county, you can see the water testing details to the right.

For example, if I click on Livingston County, I can quickly and easily see that the Livingston County Soil and Water Conservation Districts host water testing from 3-4 pm on the second and forth Tuesday of each month.

If I’m able to collect tile water from the rains this weekend, I can always freeze the water until next week, June 27, when their next testing date arrives.

Remember, water samples need to be at least 8 ounces.  In order to test flow, you should record the number of seconds it takes to fill up a container of known volume so that pounds of nitrogen lost per day can be calculated.  Also helpful is to estimate the number of acres being drained at the collection point.
