Before you get too busy with planting, you may want to check the registration stickers on all your vehicles. The State of Illinois has snagged a windfall of $1.2 million – and growing – thanks to its budget-related decision to stop mailing reminders to motorists to renew license plate stickers. The income from the $20 late fines has more than doubled for the first two months of this year, according to figures provided to AP by the secretary of state’s office. Drivers paid more than $2.7 million in fines from Jan. 1 through Feb. 22. Last year, the state collected about $1.5 million in fines for those two months, according to AP.

Do you need an emission test? The AP also reported, “The secretary of state's office isn't the only agency not mailing reminders due to the budget gridlock, either. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is no longer mailing reminders for vehicle emission tests — a necessary step for license plate renewals. However, the secretary of state is temporarily allowing license plate renewals for vehicle owners who haven't taken the emissions test.”

You are able to renew your registration online. Just look at your current registration card. In the bottom left-hand portion is an ID and pin number. That’s what you’ll need. You can also renew in person, as usual, but you WILL NOT BE RECEIVING A REMINDER FROM THE STATE.
