IL Corn Celebrates Latino Contributions to Agriculture

In commemoration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, IL Corn joined the IL Legislative Latino Caucus Foundation, the Mid-America Carpenters Regional Council, and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, for an event to discuss and celebrate the way corn connects across communities and cultures.

IL Corn joined by partners and community leaders highlight the role of the Latino community in Illinois agriculture and labor. The theme of the evening - corn connects us – reminded all of the keystone role corn has played for families across the globe for centuries. The evening also demonstrated corn’s ongoing connection between urban and rural communities across the state and the critical role it plays in lowering costs, bolstering small businesses, and supporting farm families.

The event featured a panel discussion moderated by State Senator Celina Villanueva and included IL Corn Growers Association Board Member Chris Gould, which focused on the impact of Latino communities on food, art, and labor. Panelists also shared personal stories about family members who participated in the Bracero Program and the impact those experiences had on their families and communities.

The reception gave the Latino community and IL corn farmers a chance to recognize our shared contributions to both urban and rural communities across Illinois.
