From Farm Bureau to Philanthropy: DeAnne Bloomberg Reflects on 35 Years in Illinois Agriculture
By Tara Desmond • April 30, 2026
Few people have had a front-row seat to Illinois agriculture quite like DeAnne Bloomberg. In the latest episode of IL Corn TV, host Lindsay Croke sits down with Bloomberg to reflect on nearly four decades of change in farming, policy, and rural communities. Watch the full conversation in the video below.
Bloomberg, now Vice President of Programs at the Galesburg Community Foundation, spent the bulk of her career in the Illinois Farm Bureau system. She worked in county offices across Henry, Boone, Rock Island, and Mercer counties before rising to Director of Issue Management at Illinois Farm Bureau. Looking back, she organizes her career in seven to ten year chapters, each one shaped by a different defining moment in agriculture.
She recalls the 1980s farm crisis, the early ethanol rallies in Pekin, and the explosive growth of ethanol markets between 2007 and 2012, when grain bids near ethanol plants began outpacing those at the river. She also points to COVID as a turning point that accelerated long-overdue recognition of agriculture's value and its next generation of advocates.
"Look at the students, look at the support for FFA," she said. "The growth in FFA, the urban FFA programs. A kid graduating from Iowa State in 1990, people were like, 'Why are you going into ag?'"
Bloomberg also fondly recalled the early days of farm market technology, from calling the county Farm Bureau office for daily grain bids to gathering around the DTN machine during board meeting breaks. Those memories underscore just how dramatically the industry has transformed over her career.
Her greatest professional stretch, she says, came during her final seven years at IFB, where she managed the organization's issues landscape. That meant tracking every policy development, monitoring media coverage, and coordinating subject matter experts across a wide range of topics. It was detailed, demanding work, and she loved it.
Now she is channeling that same energy into Knox, Warren, and Henderson counties through the Galesburg Community Foundation. She works alongside Executive Director Josh Gibb, a familiar face to many from his time as Knox County Farm Bureau Manager. The foundation supports five community funds across the region, and Bloomberg says she is already reconnecting with farm families she has known for years who are now giving back to their own communities through philanthropy.
"It's philanthropy at its finest," she said. "It's incredibly rewarding."
