How Late Is Too Late for Corn Fungicide

Disease Pressure So Far in 2026
The 2026 growing season has seen some degree of foliar disease in corn, but in many areas it has not been at the level one might have expected.
Gray leaf spot is present. Northern corn leaf blight is present. However, neither occurred at epidemic levels across broad regions of the countryside. In most locations, if disease is present, those lesions have stayed below the ear leaf. The critical, yield-producing upper portion of the plant has remained relatively unscathed.
A Shifting Picture
Some of that seems to be changing though as I write this article. Gray Leaf Spot is moving upward on corn plants, and Southern Rust has begun to appear in more of Illinois. The latter is particularly concerning because it can develop rapidly.
This all begs the question – how late is too late for a fungicide application? Do we have any guidance that can provide some sure footing when it comes to very late, extremely late fungicide applications?
I think we do, and I think that guidance comes in the form of hail loss considerations.
What Hail Loss Data Can Teach Us
The graphic below is from an old publication called "The National Corn Handbook." It's a resource that I have referenced frequently over my thirty-year career, produced by universities across the Midwest.
The section I will reference specifically is "NCH-1: Assessing Hail Damage to Corn." Nestled within that article is a hail defoliation chart (see below).

Hail defoliation is detrimental to the corn plant for the same reasons that lesion development is detrimental to the corn plant. Both impact yield because they reduce photosynthetic area.
Looking at the Milk Stage
Let's focus on the early milk stage of the corn plant. It is here that we gain some perspective. We will concentrate on the milk line stage. This is the stage at which you crack the ear in two and notice a color change on the kernel, the demarcation between harder starch and more fluid starch.
How much leaf area loss, from hail or from disease, is necessary before we begin to encounter yield losses that surpass ten percent? During the early milk stage, we have to lose better than 35 percent of the plant's total leaf area. During the mid-portion of the milk stage we have to lose better than 40 percent. During the later milk stage, that number climbs to 45 percent.

Those are hard numbers to reach with hail damage, and those are hard numbers to reach with lesion development. What does that mean?
What This Means for Late Fungicide Decisions
It means that we should consider a few different things when we contemplate a very late fungicide pass.
We should consider the vulnerability of the hybrid to the disease at hand, elevating vulnerable hybrids to the top of our application list. We should also consider how a corn plant builds its yield, elevating those hybrids that especially need "good things toward the latter season." It also means, though, that the stage of kernel development must be considered alongside the previous two. When we begin to hit milk line, the yield-determining period is rapidly drawing to a close. In the majority of cases, milk line is too late for us to consider fungicide applications.
