BLOOMINGTON, Ill.—The votes have been tallied and the winners of the “Shoot It Straight” video contest have been determined after the finalists’ videos were displayed in the IL Corn exhibit at the 2013 Farm Progress Show.
The Illinois Corn Marketing Board (ICMB) undertook the contest as a way to encourage youth to “Shoot It Straight” with good news about corn and agriculture in general.
High school sophomore Dylan Stahly from Huron, South Dakota, received first-place honors and an award of $2,000. His video, Ethanol and the American Farmer garnered the most votes.
Second-place winner, earning an award of $1,500, was New York University freshman, Lewie Kloster of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Third-place winner, awarded $500, was University of Massachusetts Amherst freshman, Jason Girouard of Brimfield, Massachusetts.
“We were pleased to see so many entries come in for our first video contest,” said Larry Hasheider, ICMB Chairman from Okawville. “We know there are great stories to tell about corn and agriculture, and we wanted to find a fun way to encourage youth to get engaged.”
The videos can be viewed on IL Corn’s YouTube channel, http://www.youtube.com/ilcorn.
“Sometimes we can all get bogged down in the day-to-day issues and minutia on our farms,” Hasheider added. “These videos are a great reminder to us that there is another perspective to consider and that youth truly are the future of our family businesses.”
