OPEN HOUSE PLANNED FOR NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART HORACE FEED MILL
The Equity is hosting an Open House for their new state-of-the-art Horace feed mill on Wednesday, August 22 from 12:00 – 3:00 PM. A free pork sandwich, chips, and drink will be served starting at 12:00 PM with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1:00 PM followed by tours of the mill. Illinois Corn Marketing Board is happy to be a sponsor of this event.
The feed mill is located at 13991 E. 1700th Road, Chrisman, IL.
The event is free and open to the public. RSVPs are requested for a meal count by calling Amy Mathis at (217) 342-4101. Members of the surrounding communities, farmers and anyone with an interest in learning more about the feed milling process and connection to pork production are welcome to attend. It will also be an opportunity to network with other agricultural companies and view displays and information from vendors.
The mill started construction in 2016 and began operation in February 2018. The mill is designed to produce up to 450,000 tons per year of complete swine feeds, which will feed 1.35 million market pigs annually. Finally, the mill will add demand for 6.4 million bushels of local corn and 2.7 million bushels of soybeans. The local and state economies will benefit from the positive economic contributions of additional jobs and increased taxes.
As one of the largest independent agricultural cooperatives in Illinois, The Equity is committed to furthering opportunities in production agriculture in east-central Illinois and west-central Indiana. The Equity’s roots date back to 1919 when a group of forward-thinking farmers saw that by joining together, they would have greater buying power than each farmer had individually.
Today, The Equity offers a broad range of products to fulfill their customers’ needs including agronomy, grain services, feed and livestock, energy and a Hardware Do It Center. The Equity provides services to customers in an area encompassing 20,000 square miles.
Along with the new feed mill expansion, The Equity is also looking to expand the number of contract feeding pig farms. These farms provide a low-risk business opportunity for potential growth of pork production in the area. Grain farmers and anyone with interest in pig farming or interest in bringing the next generation back to the family farm are encouraged to attend the event to learn about the possible benefits of contract pork production including:
1. Diversifying farm income during low commodity prices
2. Helping bring back a son or daughter to the farm
3. Utilizing manure as a fertilizer source to lower crop input costs
The Equity staff will be available at the Open House to answer questions about these opportunities.
