What Drives Higher Corn Yields? Dr. Fred Below Shares the Seven Wonders of 300 Bushels

What has the biggest impact on corn yield?

In the latest episode of IL Corn TV, University of Illinois crop physiologist Dr. Fred Below shares his updated "Seven Wonders of 300 Bushels," a research-based framework that highlights the management decisions with the greatest influence on corn productivity. First introduced in 2008, the framework has evolved alongside advances in genetics, fertility management and crop production.

While weather remains the No. 1 factor affecting yield, Dr. Below explains that several key decisions are within a farmer's control.

One of the biggest is fertility, particularly nitrogen management. Corn reaches its peak nitrogen uptake between the V8 and R2 growth stages, when a 240-bushel crop can take up about five pounds of nitrogen per acre each day. His research emphasizes the importance of making nutrients available when the crop needs them most while following the 4Rs of nutrient stewardship to improve efficiency and reduce potential losses.

Hybrid selection also plays a major role. According to Dr. Below, today's commercial hybrids can differ by 50 bushels or more in yield potential, making genetics one of the most important decisions growers make each season.

Dr. Below also discusses how decades of research have challenged long-held assumptions about corn production, including the rise of short-stature corn, changing planting practices and new discoveries about root architecture that could shape the future of crop management.

Watch the full interview to hear Dr. Below explain the science behind higher yields and the practical management strategies that can help farmers maximize productivity.
